The 2018 water quality report issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) found that a 46-mile segment of the Susquehanna River does not meet water quality standards for aquatic life and should be considered impaired.

At approximately 444 mi long, it is the longest river on the American east coast and the 16th longest in the United States. The broad, shallow waters also make the Susquehanna the longest, non-commercially navigable river in the country.

Many parts of the North Branch Susquehanna River are also considered safe to swim in, especially in and around state parks in Pennsylvania and New York. Usually, anywhere nearby Harrisburg on the river could have fecal bacteria contamination. In those areas, it is best to avoid the water.

Pennsylvania has 6 major watersheds: the Ohio, the Genesee, the Susquehanna, the Delaware, the Erie, and the Potomac. Conservation districts are actively working to protect Pennsylvania's watersheds.

Last summer, 56 percent of samples had a level of E. coli that would be unsafe for swimming or water recreation — and in the summer of 2022 alone, there were more than 700 sewer overflows from Harrisburg into the Susquehanna. “With climate change, we're going to continue to see more frequent and intense storm events.

The Susquehanna River drains the largest watershed (48 percent) and supplies 55 percent of the freshwater flowing into the Chesapeake Bay.

“There is no doubt that the Susquehanna River is an endangered river,” said Chesapeake Bay Foundation Vice President Kim Coble. “It is the largest source of fresh water to the Bay, as well as, the largest source of nitrogen pollution. This pollution feeds the algal blooms and dead zones that hurt aquatic life.

Farmers in the Susquehanna basin have historically applied a great deal of fertilizer to their crops. Another source of excess nutrients is the discharge from sewage treatment plants. Plants that do not employ nutrient control measures may release large amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen into the waterways.
