Potassium Chloride in Sodium Chloride Injection, USP is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, solution for fluid and electrolyte replenishment in a single dose container for intravenous administration. It contains no antimicrobial agents.

Potassium chloride is used to prevent or to treat low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia). Potassium levels can be low as a result of a disease or from taking certain medicines, or after a prolonged illness with diarrhea or vomiting.

Approximately 90 percent of all potassium chloride manufactured is used in the fertilizer industry. Other uses include industrial, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage applications. In medicine it is used to treat or prevent low levels of potassium (hypokalemia) in the human body.

Injection of a lethal dose of KCl produces death by cardiac arrest. KCl eliminates the potassium concentration gradient in cardiac muscle, and the depolarized muscle cannot repolarize.

Take each oral potassium chloride dose with a meal and full glass of water or other liquid to lower the chances of stomach upset. Don't take oral potassium chloride on an empty stomach.
