California Child Custody Evaluations. Custody evaluations are assessments done by mental health professionals to determine what's in a child's best interest. In California courts, you may hear them called 730, 3110 or 3111 evaluations, referring to the sections of state code that govern them.

If you and your child's other parent cannot agree on a parenting plan, the judge can order a child custody evaluation. Usually, parents pay a fee for the service.

It is a broader statute than Family Code section 3111. Typically, Evidence Code section 730 evaluations involve psychological testing and are performed by clinical psychologists. They involve a more in-depth investigation than Family Code section 3111 evaluations. They are also more expensive and more time consuming.

Custody evaluations, when ordered by the Court and conducted by an evaluator, are charged at the set fee of $1,200.00. Generally, each party pays half of the cost ($600.00). If a custody evaluation is ordered, the Court will make a determination as to the parties' ability to pay.

Requests for copies may be made in person in the clerk's office at the Justice Center where the case is filed or by mail. To request copies by mail, provide the information or copy request form along with a check payable to “Clerk of the Court.” DO NOT SEND CASH.
