Get Oral Passages

The Oral Passage Understanding Scale is a measure of listening (auditory) comprehension for individuals ages 5 to 21 years. It evaluates a person's ability to listen to passages that are read aloud and recall information about them. This ability is key to success in the classroom and social situations.

Oral reading assessments are conducted one-on-one with each child in order to measure, in essence, what that child is expected to know and able to do.

The OPUS is a new measure of auditory comprehension that evaluates a person's ability to listen to passages read aloud and recall information about them. It also measures memory skills, which are integral to listening comprehension.

Model fluent oral reading: The teacher reads the text aloud with emphasis on expression and intentional pausing. Guided oral reading: Students read a text aloud with feedback and explicit guidance from the teacher. Repeated oral reading: Students read and reread a text multiple (for example, three) times.

The OPUS consists of 17 passages, each with 7 to 10 associated questions. Divided into six Item Sets, these passages allow a brief administration time of just 10 to 20 minutes. Each Item Set has 5 passages and up to 44 items.

Fluency Passages | Reading A-Z. Fluency Passages. Fluency refers to a student's speed, smoothness, and ease of oral reading. Fluent readers read more quickly and can skip decoding in favor of comprehension. In addition, fluent readers enjoy reading more than students who read haltingly.
