Explaining the S5/S8 Interface in LTE: In principle S5 and S8 is the same interface, the difference being that S8 is used when roaming between different operators while S5 is network internal. The S5/S8 interface is used within the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) for LTE.

For operators, roaming services can be classified into inbound and outbound roaming. The inbound roaming service allows subscribers from other operators to access the local network and services. The outbound roaming service allows subscribers from the local network to access another operator's network and services.

The following are LTE Interfaces: S1-MME :- Reference point for the control plane protocol between E-UTRAN and MME. S1-U:- Reference point between E-UTRAN and Serving GW for the per bearer user plane tunnelling and inter eNodeB path switching during handover.

The LTE-Uu is the radio interface that connects the UEs to the eNodeBs eNodeB with the UE. It handles all the signaling messages between the eNodeB and the MME as well as the data traffic between the UE and the S-GW.

S8 Interface is the interface between the SGW and the PGW that exist in different Networks (different PLMNs). It works in both the Control plane and the User Plane.

Essentially, it lets subscribers access voice and data services when traveling outside of their home network thanks to roaming agreements between different operators.

S5 Interface works in both the Control Plane and the User Plane. It uses GTP-C protocol in the Control Plane, which creates a GTP tunnel between the SGW and the PGW in order to exchange signaling messages between each other.

This is called Home Routed Roaming. Whether a particular service will be delivered via home routing roaming or local breakout roaming is dependent upon roaming agreements between network operators. It is also possible to configure networks to use different roaming options for different services.
