Proprioception is an important skill to have. It allows us to know where our body is in space. Proprioception is needed for childhood development and the development of fine motor & gross motor skills, body awareness, emotional regulation, and also the ability to participate in daily life.

We therefore propose the following operational definition: Proprioceptive training is an intervention that targets the improvement of proprioceptive function. It focuses on the use of somatosensory signals such as proprioceptive or tactile afferents in the absence of information from other modalities such as vision.

An appropriate proprioceptive training is important for maintaining the best possible physical fitness. It encompasses exercises for stability and coordination, stimulates motor learning, helps in maintaining proper body posture and balance, and improves body control.

Proprioceptive exercises are exercises which challenge and develop proprioceptive receptors. Proprioception helps to stabilise a joint during static and dynamic functional tasks. Decreased proprioception can lead to an increased risk of injury.

Proprioception (Joint Position Sense): Proprioception is our sense of joint / limb positioning. It is often measured through joint position sense - active joint position sense (AJPS) and passive joint position sense (PJPS).

Proprioception exercises, are moves that re-train your body to control the position of the injured area. If you injure your ankle, you may have very poor proprioception and feel unstable. But once you begin training, your awareness of space and ability to balance, will greatly improve.

Objective: Proprioceptive training is any intervention aiming to improve proprioceptive function with the ultimate goal to enhance motor function and performance. It has been promoted as an approach to enhance athletic performance and as a tool for sensorimotor rehabilitation.
