Radiography is the most commonly used non-destructive testing method for pipeline inspection.

The best and most popular pipe inspection techniques include pipeline radiography (RT) and ultrasonic testing (UT), including phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT). These popular pipe inspection techniques are forms of NDT pipeline inspection and can be used to detect flaws without harming the asset.

Inspection robots can be stationed directly on a production line, monitoring parts or objects as they pass along a conveyor. Another option for robotic inspection automation is with a robotic workcell. Robotic workcells designed for inspection applications can consist of one or multiple robots.

The front part of robot consists of DC motor with driller. Compression coil helical springs are mounted around the wheels. While inserting the robot inside the pipe it is compressed manually. Once it is inside the pipe the spring near the wheel decompresses and have a strong grip along the diameter of the pipe.

The approach uses a patent-pending magnetic Mecanum wheel technology to navigate into the annular space between the pipeline and casing. Operators can then navigate the vehicle and get real-time images of the pipe for pre-excavation inspection, or as an alternative to excavation.

The PIG is sent into the pipeline on special guides. The inspection device uses magnetic fields to identify vulnerable points. In theory the pipe is of the same thickness at every point. The magnetic field changes where the pipe is thinner.

In this study, an inline inspection robot was developed for crack and corrosion detection in the pipeline. The developed robot consists of ultrasonic sensors to avoid obstacles, a visual aid with high resolution to view real time images and colour sensors for corrosion detection.

Architects can use robotics to build habitable structures in areas that would normally be unsuitable for human life, such as oceans or deserts. Robots will build all of the structures that humans need to survive in these environments long before the first occupants arrive.
