Parasolid delivers 3D modeling functionality in hundreds of different software applications, spanning 3D product design, collaboration, simulation, and manufacturing.

Parasolid file format is native for Parasolid geometrical kernel. Today it is widely used in a range of applications, including SolidWorks, SolidEdge, NX, Microstation, Ansys, Abaqus and others. Parasolid has two primary file extensions: . x_t, which is text based, and . x_b – binary-based format.

Parasolid allows for surface edges to be defined by adjacent faces. STEP files have rigid, curve-based definitions of face edges. Generally, parasolid is better in SW, as SW is driven by the Parasolid kernel. Sometimes STEP files can be improved by exporting as STEP203 and re-importing.

Parasolid parts are normally saved in XT format, which usually has the file extension . x_t. The format is documented and open. There is also a binary version of the format, usually with an . x_b extension, which is somewhat more compact.

The Parasolid translator exports SOLIDWORKS part or assembly documents as Parasolid text files or binary files. Binary files are smaller than text files, but binary files are not supported in some target applications.
