When you amend a tax return, it can take up to 16 weeks to process even if you e-file. If you file an amended return, you should still get the refund figured on the original return. Then, if your refund is larger due to the change, you'll get the difference between the original and amended amounts.

IRS Form 1040X is the Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return form. It's what taxpayers use when they need to make changes to a personal income tax return they've already filed. Specifically, you can use it to make corrections to IRS Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ.

To amend a return for 2018 or earlier, you'll need to print the completed Form 1040-X and any other forms you're amending. Attach any necessary supporting documentation, such as: Any new or amended W-2s or 1099 forms. Other forms or schedules that changed, such as Schedule A if you updated your itemized deductions.
