The MICR line on checks must be printed using magnetic toner. This special toner is only available for laser printers (and some special dot matrix printers.) Inkjet printers can not print MICR! In general, your printer manufacturer will not sell this special toner.

This MICR E13B font (also often called MICR font, or E-13B font) is necessary to print numbers and special symbols at the bottom of checks so they can be recognized by the OCR/magnetic ink reader systems used by banks in North America (US and Canada) and other countries such as UK and Malta.

The Federal Reserve and all banks require that checks be printed with MICR ink or toner for ease of check processing.

The font type used for printing checks is Arial. This is hard coded into the system and cannot be changed.

MICR Fonts The two magnetic fonts used in coding the MICR line worldwide are E-13B and CMC-7. The E-13B font was developed and accepted as the standard by the ABA in 1958. E-13B is used mainly in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Columbia, as well as Europe, Central America, and certain Far East countries.

The font is called E13B, and it's been the standard for all checks in North America since the late 1950s. As for the bulges, they're so that the numbers have a certain magnetic signal strength at each point from left to right. Confusing?

Under ideal conditions, there should be only one font in use, the MICR E13B Match. It has been created specifically to meet the ANSI and ABA (X9, 27-1995) banking standards when printed at exactly point size 12.

There are two different fonts which are used depending on established banking standards in the country. These fonts are E-13B and CMC-7. Currently, this font or MICR Character set is used in the United States of America, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, India, Mexico, Colombia, and Turkey.
