Born just before the end of the Civil War, George Washington Carver (1864-1942) spent one year in slavery, but that year altered the course of his life. His father died shortly after Carver's birth, and his mother was kidnapped by slave raiders when he was only six weeks old, leaving him a nameless orphan.

Later, George wrote: “The sad news reached me here that James, my only brother, had died with the small pox. Being conscious as never before that I was left alone, I trusted God and pushed ahead.” Although Jim lived a short life, his relationship with George showed their deep connection during their childhood years.

Carver grew up knowing little about his mother or his father, who had died in an accident before he was born. Moses Carver and his wife Susan raised the young George and his brother James as their own and taught the boys how to read and write.
