To enter the regional phase in EPO, it is necessary to submit: - a request to grant a patent; - a copy of the international application. The Power of Attorney is not required to obtain the filing date, however, it may be requested by the Patent Office at any time during prosecution.

As is the case for national patent applications, applications generally must include drawings. The physical requirements for the applications are found in Rule 11 of the regulations.

The PCT makes it possible to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in a large number of countries by filing a single “international” patent application instead of filing several separate national or regional patent applications.

Drawings must be on sheets of A4 paper (29.7 cm x 21 cm) which must be flexible, strong, white, smooth, non-shiny and durable. The sheets must be free from creases and cracks; they must not be folded. Each sheet must be reasonably free from erasures and must be free from alterations, overwriting and interlineations.

You can submit your PCT application and related documents to the PRH using the EPO Online Filing software (eOLF). Patent agencies generally use the eOLF; thus, if you choose to entrust your application to an agency, you do not have to download the software yourself.

Applicant must be a resident or national of a PCT Contracting State. The application must include at least one applicant who is a resident or national of the United States and the application must be entirely in the English language for the United States receiving Office (RO/US) to be deemed competent.

A single filing of a PCT application is made with a Receiving Office (RO) in one language. It then results in a search performed by an International Searching Authority (ISA), accompanied by a written opinion regarding the patentability of the invention, which is the subject of the application.
