By 2023, the Luke AFB intention is to achieve site closure for the majority of the FYR-listed sites. The US Air Force defines site closure as when the regulatory agency(ies) concur that an environmental site's active management and monitoring is complete.

Luke Air Force Base Luke AFB is one of the largest in the world, operating close to Phoenix and Glendale AZ. It is known to be the only base to train F-16 Falcon pilots. Luke turns out close to 500 pilots and 700 technicians each year for deployment all over the globe.

At Luke AFB, unaccompanied housing is available to enlisted ranks E-1 to E-3 and E-4 with less than three years of service. For unaccompanied Airmen of rank E-4 with greater than three years of service, they may find housing in the local community.

Luke Air Force Base is an active-duty F-16 Fighting Falcon training base with 170 F-16s assigned. The host command at Luke is the 56th Fighter Wing (56 FW), under Air Education and Training Command's 19th Air Force. The base population includes about 7,500 military members and 15,000 family members.

Luke is the largest and only active-duty F-16 training base in the world with more than 138 F-16s assigned. The 56th Fighter Wing, Luke's host unit, is composed of four groups, 24 squadrons, including seven fighter squadrons.

VISITOR PROCEDURES: Any visitor (age 16 or older) is required to be screened, vetted, and issued appropriate DBIDS pass by security forces prior to gaining access to the installation.

Typically best if you pull off right by 143rd AVE, about a quarter of a mile west of Litchfield Road. Runway 21L/R thresholds are both visible, but this spot really shines for aircraft on short final for the aforementioned runways. 03 Deparutres can be spotted too but these are already very high.
