To use conditional formatting on checkboxes, select the cells with the checkboxes and go to Format > Conditional formatting. Set up the conditions in the sidebar, under Criteria > Format cells if, then choose the format you want to apply under those conditions.

Since the first checkbox is linked to cell D2, this cell's value is TRUE if the checkbox is checked, and FALSE if it's unchecked. You'll use the value of cell D2 as the determinant for the conditional formatting rule. Select the list of names and then, in the Ribbon, go to Home > Conditional Formatting > New Rule.

Note #1: In Google Sheets, if a checkbox is checked then that cell has an underlying value of TRUE, which is why we use the formula =$B2=TRUE() to determine if a checkbox is checked.

Conditional formatting is a great way to make checkboxes easier to understand. As an example, data can be made green when a checkbox is checked and red when it is unchecked.
