California's Supervised Driving Requirements In addition to fulfilling the formal driver's education requirements, teens are also required to log at least 50 hours of supervised driving before they can get a provisional license.

Ages 16-17 Driver Rules (Initial Licensing Stage) Must obey nighttime driving restrictions. While you will take a final exam and quizzes during your six hour course, you will still be required to take and pass written, vision and behind-the-wheel tests at the Secretary of State facility in order to get your license.

To qualify for a provisional license, a teen with a valid permit must drive under the supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age for not less than 50 hours. At least 15 of the 50 hours must have taken place at night. Inexperience is a leading factor in teen crashes.

That law says: “No person shall drive a motor vehicle unless he holds a valid license or permit.” Operating a vehicle without a valid license is a Class A or B misdemeanor. Some details can change the charge. The other law requires you to produce your license if asked by the police.

Must practice driving a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours at night, supervised by a parent or adult age 21 or older with a valid driver's license. Must not acquire any driving convictions during the nine-month permit phase.
