Infiltration Basins are depressions that capture, store and allow stormwater to infiltrate into the soils. The design volume for an infiltration device is equivalent to the volume that is completely draw down to the bottom of the infiltration system within 72 hours.

Common infiltration practices include drywells, bioretention, permeable pavement, infiltration trenches, infiltration basins, and subsurface infiltration galleries.

There are two types of bioretention: infiltration and filtration. Infiltration facilities allow stormwater to flow into the native soils and mimic the natural movement of water (aka hydrology) of the pre-developed site. Filtration facilities are lined, which prevents on-site absorption and downward passage of water.

Disadvantages: Infiltration systems convey surface water to groundwater regardless of quality. If not treated, stormwater flows may negatively affect groundwater. In particular, infiltration practices are not effective for nitrogen removal.
