The QOL-AD scale uses a scale of 1–4 (poor, fair, good, or excellent) to rate a variety of life domains, including the patient's physical health, mood, relationships, activities, and ability to complete tasks [21], [22]. Both patients (self-assessed) and caregivers (proxy-assessed) completed the QOL-AD.

The most commonly used scales are the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) and the Functional Assessment Staging Test (FAST). Each of these scales has a different system for determining the stage and severity of an individual's mental decline.

A group of clinicians with extensive experience in dealing with dementia patients developed by consensus the Quality of Life in Dementia Scale (QUALID), an 11-item scale. The window of observation for each subject was 7 days. A 5-point scale captured the frequency of each item (total score ranging from 11 to 55).

Caregivers complete the measure as a questionnaire about their patients' QOL, while patients complete it in interview format about their own QOL. The measure consists of 13 items, rated on a four point scale, with 1 being poor and 4 being excellent. Total scores range from 13 to 52.
