World Games Dublin 2003. From 17 to 25 June 2023, the Special Olympics World Games will take place in Berlin – the first time that Germany will host the Games!

In 1978, Special Olympics Ireland was formed and over the past 40 years we have grown significantly. Over the years many significant events have helped shape our future.

Then, one day in July 1968, the world began to change. The first Special Olympics competition was held in Chicago's Soldier Field for young people with intellectual disabilities. The goal was to put a bright—and very public—spotlight on ability, not disability.

History. The organization was founded in 1978 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver to provide children and adults with a year-round sports program. The organisation was made up of 27,000 athletes. At the time, it was one of the first European programmes of the international Special Olympics movement.

The first Special Olympics World Summer Games held outside the USA were an astonishing success. As this video shows, the joy and power of these 2003 Games in Dublin "transformed" Ireland in ways no one expected.

Special Olympics Ireland creates opportunities for children and adults with learning (intellectual) disabilities to take part in various sports training and competition year-round. To be eligible to take part in the Special Olympics programmes, participants have to have an intellectual/learning disability.
