The Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – are the foundation of the Christian life.

Perhaps the best-known miracle attributed to Saint Clare is the defense of her monastery and the town of Assisi from an invading army. As soldiers scaled the walls of her monastery, she held aloft the Blessed Sacrament and prayed for God's protection.

1214 This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein ) means to “plunge” or “immerse”; the “plunge” into the water symbolizes the catechumen's burial into Christ's death, fromwhich he rises up by resurrection with him, as “a new creature.”

Clare of Assisi (July 16, 1194 – August 11, 1253): Remembered on August 11. Her symbols are flowers (esp. roses and lilies), monstrance, book/Rule of life, cross, cloth.

Clare of Assisi is the patron saint of televisions and computer screens, believe it or not. An early follower of St. Francis, Clare founded The Order of Poor Ladies, which eventually became known as the Poor Clares.

On Palm Sunday of 1212, Clare decided to elope – not with the man to whom her family promised her – but to Jesus. Wearing her best dress and jewelry, she went to the Portiuncula where Francis and his followers held lighted candles and sang the psalms. There, Clare Offreduccio promised her life to Jesus.

Saint Clare is known for warding off invading soldiers while kneeling in prayer holding a monstrance. She was an avid follower of St. Francis of Assisi and started the Order of Poor Ladies which is now known as the Order of Saint Clare. She is the patron saint of eyes and Television.
