Time required for obtaining results of a non-criminal-justice background check. Utah's processing time may take up to 48 hours and the FBI processing time may take up to 48 hours (worst case scenario).

THROUGH THE MAIL: Download and fill out the Criminal History Record Application (Criminal Background Check). Follow the instructions on the form, and mail the completed application and fee to our office. For more information, please call the Bureau of Criminal Identification at 801-965-4445.

IN PERSON: Individuals may come into our office and obtain a copy of their own Utah criminal history. Fee is $15.00, payable in cash, personal check, VISA or MasterCard, money order, or cashier's check. A valid form of government issued picture ID must accompany the request.

Criminal checks If a candidate's criminal history is limited to one state, or one home country, then the check can take one to two business days. However, verifying international records takes much longer. If the candidate has emigrated or worked in different countries, this process can stretch up to, or past, 20 days.

Utah law states employees or candidates must obtain their own background checks and provide the records to their employer or prospective employer. Employees or candidates can also submit a release form that allows their background check records to be sent to a third party—in this case, the employer.

Typically, a Level 2 Background Check covers search of fingerprint-based information, national criminal history records, as well as county criminal records.

The bureau may not maintain any records of the criminal history background check longer than 20 days from the date of the dealer's request, if the bureau determines that the individual receiving the firearm is not prohibited from purchasing, possessing, or transferring the firearm under state or federal law.
