In January of 2015, Kennesaw State University merged with Southern Polytechnic State University, making Kennesaw State University the third largest school in the University System of Georgia.

First called the Technical Institute, Southern Polytechnic State University opened its doors in 1948 to 116 students. In fall 2004, approximately 3,700 students enrolled to pursue a technology-related education. In 2015 the university merged with Kennesaw State University.

1996 the school once again renamed itself to Southern Polytechnic State University and on November 1, 2013 the Georgia Board of Regents made plans to consolidate SPSU into Kennesaw State University, leveraging both campuses and offerings to better reach and educate the next generation.

By definition, University means a high-level educational institution in which students study for degrees and academic research is done. Polytechnic on the other hand was identified as a technical education of engineering or diploma in engineering courses which is focused on practical and skill oriented training.
