Footnote is explanatory text related to the data displayed by the graph. For additional information on displaying and formatting titles and labels for a graph, see Creating titles and labels. Legend displays the markers and labels that distinguish each series on a graph.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.

Footnotes are referenced by certain symbols (*, †, ‡, etc.), letters, or numbers, most often in superior or superscript form. A footnote begins on the same page as its reference call, but it may be carried over to the bottom of successive pages.

From the menus, choose Edit > Add Graph Footnote. A text box containing <FOOTNOTE> is displayed below the graph.

To insert a footnote automatically in a Word document: Click on the point in the text where the footnote should appear. Select the “References” tab at the top and then click on “Insert Footnote” Type the text you want into the footnote that appears at the bottom of the page.

Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.
