Get Hunter Course Repeat Form

CUNY students are allowed to repeat courses in which they receive an F. If they earn a grade of C or better, then the new grade will replace the old grade in the calculation of the overall GPA, but the F will remain on the transcript.

Students may not repeat a course they have already passed unless that course has been designated as repeatable in this Bulletin. In instances in which a course is repeated, the repeated course does not confer additional credit, and the average of the two passing grades is included in the G.P.A.

If you earn a failing grade (F or FIN) in a course and then retake the course in a subsequent semester, earning a grade of A, B, C, or P, both grades will remain on the transcript. However, the failing grade will no longer be calculated in your Hunter GPA.

If a course is repeated, both grades will remain on the student's transcript and both grades will be computed in the student's grade point average, but the student will receive credit only once for the course.

In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA. Some schools, however, average the two grades and include the averaged grade in the GPA.

The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes don't replace your low grades – they average in with them. That's right: your low grade won't be dropped – the retaken class grade will be added to it and averaged.

Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back. Start by asking for more help and studying differently or harder if you retake the course. Most importantly, don't give up.
