Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is the comprehensive body of skills, research and knowledge that helps people make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.

There are three levels of consumers. Primary consumers eat producers and would include organisms such as deer and rabbits. Secondary consumers eat the primary consumers; examples are spiders and snakes. Tertiary consumers eat both primary and secondary consumers and consist of animals such as lions and foxes.

For example, a family and consumer scientist working in business might be hired by a food manufacturer to test and sample a variety of frozen pizzas made by other manufacturers and determine ways the company might improve their own frozen pizzas and become more competitive in the market.
