California law also authorizes pay-to-stay programs in county jails. Ac- cording to Section 1203.1c(a) of the California Penal Code, inmates may be ordered by the court—if they have the financial wherewithal—to pay for the cost of their incarceration in the county jail.

Participants may accept visitors on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The visits are non-contact. The work release program costs $150 for the first day and $100 for each day thereafter. There are no fees for the straight time program.

Under California Penal Code section 4024.2, the Sheriff is allowed to release inmates who fit a certain criteria established by the Sheriff to perform work for the county in-lieu of their jail sentence. An eight to ten hour work day is equivalent to twenty-four hours in custody.

During the day Rec is available to those on good behavior and responding.
