If the papers are not served in the correct way at the correct time, the court cannot go forward with the case. A person is served when they officially receive the papers. Papers which start an action (Summons, Petition, Request for Order, etc) must be filed first and then served on the other person(s).

All applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age on the test date.

Have the Sheriff in the courthouse closest to where the Defendant lives or works serve your claim. If the Defendant lives in another County you must contact that County's Sheriff Civil Process Unit to determine what their process is to serve court papers. The Fee is $40.

"Personal service" means that someone – NOT a party to the case – must personally deliver the court documents to the other side. In “personal service”: The server gives the papers to the party being served. It can be at the party's home, work, or anywhere on the street.

Complete a Sheriff's Instructions form, and place 2 complete sets of documents with the instructions in the lobby drop box. Provide the Sheriff two complete copies of the documents you want served. You may submit your request for service through the online portal on their website.
