You cannot keep retirement funds in your account indefinitely. You generally have to start taking withdrawals from your IRA, SIMPLE IRA, SEP IRA, or retirement plan account when you reach age 72 (73 if you reach age 72 after Dec. 31, 2022).

Roth IRA accounts are funded with after-tax dollars—meaning you will pay taxes on it when you deposit the funds. Roth contributions aren't tax-deductible, and qualified distributions aren't taxable income. So you won't report them on your return.

Do I request the distribution check directly from my employer or from the financial institution where contributions to my SEP or SIMPLE IRA are invested? You will need to contact the financial institution holding your IRA assets.

The SECURE Act requires the entire balance of the participant's inherited IRA account to be distributed or withdrawn within 10 years of the death of the original owner. However, there are exceptions to the 10-year rule, and spouses inheriting an IRA have a much broader range of options available to them.

A distribution from a traditional IRA will be included in the owner's income as ordinary income and, depending on the owner's age, may also be subject to a 10% early distribution penalty. Qualified distributions from Roth IRAs are not subject to income tax. See Roth IRA Distributions.
