The 12 animals of Xinyiquan Dragon – contracting and expanding. Tiger – courage. Monkey – agility. Horse – speed. Alligator – gliding. Cockerel – combative. Hawk – soaring. Swallow – skimming.

These five animal styles are, Tiger, White Crane, Serpent, Leopard and Dragon.

They divided the martial art into five styles, based upon animals; Dragon, Tiger, Crane, Leopard and Snake. This was known as Ng Ying Ga, or Five Animal Style – each animal complimented the others, and yet still maintained its own unique characteristics.

The Tiger is the biggest and strongest of the animals in the five animal styles, and its movements emphasis the use of strength in conquering an opponent. The Tiger style emphasizes strong low stances and powerful clawing, grabbing and clubbing movements.

There are many styles of Kung Fu. Traditionally these styles classify into internal Kung Fu and external Kung Fu. The major internal Kung Fu styles include Taiji Quan, Ba Guazhang, and Xingyi Quan. External Kung Fu styles include Shaolin Quan, Wing Chun Quan, Sanda, and its derived styles.

These styles often include Buddhist philosophy, meditation, imagery and principles. The most famous of these are the Shaolin (and related) styles, e.g. Shaolinquan, Choy Li Fut, Fut Gar, Luohanquan, Hung Gar, Wing Chun, Dragon style and White Crane. and recently a contemporary style called wuxingheqidao.

The Five Animal Style includes the dragon, tiger, crane, leopard, and snake. Masterfully incorporating both soft and hard movements while using external energy and internal as well, this form of Chinese martial arts became known as Shaolin Kung Fu.
