Poll Watcher/ a person appointed to observe the conduct of an election on behalf of: • a candidate, • a political party, or • the proponents or opponents of a measure (specific-purpose political committees).

Poll watchers, sometimes referred to as "election observers," are individuals who may observe steps in the election process. Each state has its own laws and procedures on when and where observers can be present, as well as who can observe the election.

In addition to learning firsthand how elections are run, student poll workers can be paid a stipend that generally ranges between $65 and $150, depending on the county. For more information about becoming a high school poll worker, please contact your county elections official.

WHAT IS A POLL WATCHER? A person may be asked by a candidate, political party or political committee to go to a polling place or early voting site to observe. Florida law defines this person as a Poll Watcher. The Poll Watcher observes the polling place to determine if any violations of the election laws occur.

First, it gives the candidate a picture of where they stand with the electorate before any campaigning takes place.

Poll workers conduct assigned duties at a polling site during early voting and on Election Day. Duties can include processing voters, explaining how to mark a ballot, use the voting equipment, or counting votes.

A poll worker must be 18 years old (or 16 if a high school student), a US citizen, and a registered voter in California. Additionally, non-citizens with permanent resident status who would otherwise be eligible to vote are allowed to serve as poll workers.
