By law, all infants born in Tennessee must have a newborn screening submitted to the Tennessee State Laboratory. It is the hospitals responsibility to fill out the collection form completely and accurately and to submit a satisfactory newborn screen on all infants prior to discharge regardless of age.

All newborns must participate in newborn screening unless a parent or guardian objects on religious grounds. Parents who decline must sign a written refusal statement.

The Neometrics® internet-based Case Management System (iCMS) is a software application for tracking and managing the hearing screening follow-up process. The iCMS application automates daily workflow and provides a mechanism for recording follow-up activities.

In 2008 Tennessee Code Annotated Title 68, Chapter 5, Part 9 (Claire's Law) hearing screening became required. The newborn hearing screening program is responsible for assuring all infants born in Tennessee receive a hearing screening before discharge or prior to one month of age.

The Tennessee Newborn screening program started in 1968 screening for PKU and now screens for over 70 conditions using a dried blood spot, for critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) using pulse oximetry, and for congenital hearing loss via hearing screening.

Newborn screening may be life-saving. The risks of not screening your baby are serious. The conditions on the newborn screening panel can cause permanent and severe health problems or lead to death if not detected early.

An "abnormal" result means that the test results were not normal. "Abnormal" results may appear on the newborn screening report for some of the disorders on the newborn screening panel.
