The Electronics Technician (ET) rating was established in 1948, a recognition of the need for specialists to maximize the potential of the rapidly expanding field of electronics. Its genesis is found in the wartime Radio Technician (RT) rating, which was redesignated Electronics Technician Mate in 1945.

Fire controlmen attend apprentice technical training and "A"-School at Naval Station Great Lakes; this course is roughly 8 months long followed then by a "C"-school, based on one of the systems described below, which vary in length from 4 months to 8 months.

Electronics Technicians are responsible for electronic equipment: computer information systems, long range radar, calibration of test equipment. The Navy Rate you receive will be Petty Officer 1st Class and you will need to cut the rank to make 2nd or 3rd class.

As an ET, your responsibilities may include: Detecting enemy planes and ships, and determining target distance. Maintaining, repairing and calibrating all electronic equipment used to detect, track, and identify adversaries, and for electronic countermeasures.

A high-school diploma or equivalent is required to become an Enlisted Sailor and an Electronics Technician. You must also be a U.S. citizen eligible for security clearance. ET applicants should have strong arithmetic, writing and speaking skills, and well as the ability to work with computers and electronic devices.

The Electronics Tech rate is a sea-intensive rate. During a twenty-year career in the Navy, they will spend about 60 percent of their career at sea, and 40 percent assigned to shore stations.
