Thermal paper (sometimes referred to as an audit roll) is a special fine paper that is coated with a material formulated to change color when exposed to heat. It is used in thermal printers, particularly in inexpensive or lightweight devices such as adding machines, cash registers, and credit card terminals.

The thermal paper starts as a typical “base paper” made of wood pulp. The paper is then primed with a chemical known as the precoat. The precoat fills any pores or spaces between the fibers of the paper. The precoat assures that the printing surface is smooth and even.

A fax roll is a type of fax paper. The paper is made of thermal paper, similar to the type of paper found in receipt printers on cash registers.

The receipts we receive when we buy groceries, prescriptions, gas, clothing, restaurant meals, and much more are generally printed on thermal paper coated with either Bisphenol-A (BPA) or its chemical cousin Bisphenol-S (BPS).

Some common examples are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), cationic and anionic hydroxyethyl cellulose (EHEC), modified starch, and dextrin. Styrene butadiene latex, Styrene acrylic, dextrin, oxidized starch are used in coatings to bind the filler to the paper.

Today, fax paper is usually the same as printer paper, either for a laser printer paper (most of the time) or inkjet printer paper (rarely). Older fax machines used a roll of thermal paper (very much like today's receipt printers). Today's fax machines rarely use fax rolls.
