The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States.

The District of Columbia has been separate from Maryland and Virginia for over 200 years. While DC, Maryland, and Virginia work cooperatively on many regional issues, neither Maryland nor Virginia residents are interested in annexing the District of Columbia.

The city is on the Potomac River, across from Virginia, and shares land borders with Maryland to its north and east. Washington, D.C., was named for George Washington, a Founding Father and the first president of the United States.

DC stands for District of Columbia. Its creation comes directly from the US Constitution, which provides that the district, "not exceeding 10 Miles square," would "become the Seat of the Government of the United States."

Washington, D.C. is a territory and not a state, nor is it part of any U.S. state. It is surrounded by the state of Maryland on the northwest, northeast, and southeast and bordered by the state of Virginia, across the Potomac River, on the west and southwest.

DC residents elect a non-voting delegate to the US House of Representatives, two shadow Senators, and one shadow Representative whose task is to petition Congress for statehood. District residents have no voting representation in the House of Representatives.

It is not in a state, it is a stand-alone Federal City. It is called the District of Columbia though, because it was created geographically from land co-opted from the state of Maryland in the area called Columbia. If you look on a map you will see it is a half-diamond on the east side of the Potomac River.

D.C. residents have no representation in the Senate. The Twenty-third Amendment, adopted in 1961, effectively entitles the District to three electoral votes in the election of the president and vice president. The District's lack of voting representation in Congress has been an issue since the capital's founding.
