The master's gown has longer, closed sleeves. The doctoral robe usually is the most elaborate; it is made of velvet, has three stripes on the arms, and includes a hood. For faculty and doctoral robes, the robe itself is usually specific to the university, while the hood trim indicates the academic discipline.

Doctoral gowns are typically black, although some schools use gowns in the school's colors. The Code calls for the outside shell of the hood to remain black in that case. Doctoral gowns have bell sleeves with three velvet bands on them and velvet facing on the front of the gown.

If you plan on having a long career in academia, it might be worth the investment to buy regalia up front. As a professor, there's nothing quite like having your own custom robe and tam for Graduation.

Color. Black is recommended. The degree-granting institution may, however, select unique colors for the gown and trim.

It's expensive because it's essentially low-volume custom clothing and is tailored. So a bit like buying a tailored suit. In most university towns there is some group that provides rentals.

Gowns for the bachelor's or master's degrees are untrimmed. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet (usually black); three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. These facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the color distinctive for the degree, or the institution's colors.
