It can take anywhere from six months to several years to become a firefighter in Virginia. Some departments provide training, while certificates and associate degrees require students to enroll in vocational schools or community colleges.

Minimum of 18 years of age by the date the application process closes. There is no maximum age limit. However, all candidates must be able to successfully pass the Candidate Physical Agility Test.

The average fire academy program takes about 12 to 14 weeks to complete a total of 600 hours of training. While most programs want all students to enter at the same time, some have staggered entrance options. Generally, you'll need to commit anywhere from 40 to 48 hours weekly to undergo the program.
