By law, your position with the Postal Service cannot be taken from you by the government without due process. That is not the case for persons in private employment who as a rule can be fired for any reason that is not illegal or contrary to the terms of a written contract of employment.

"Yes," your employer can require you to work overtime and can fire you if you refuse, ing to the Fair Labor Standards Act or FLSA (29 U.S.C. § 201 and following), the federal overtime law. The FLSA sets no limits on how many hours a day or week your employer can require you to work.

The work assignment agreement states that. management can schedule an employee from the regular overtime desired list to avoid paying penalty overtime to the carrier on his/her own work assignment.

Employees are required to be regular in attendance. Failure to be regular in attendance may result in disciplinary action, including removal from the Postal Service.

Article 17, Section 3 and Article 31, Section 2, of the National Agreement require the Postal Service to make available to the Union information which is relevant and necessary to process a grievance or to determine whether a grievance exists.

Postal overtime is compensation paid pursuant to Postal Service regulations and in ance with applicable provisions of the collective bargaining agreements to eligible personnel at 150 percent of each employee's basic hourly rate for actual work hours in excess of 8 paid hours in a day, 40 paid hours in a service ...

In emergencies or as the needs of the service require, the postmaster or installation head may require employees to perform work that is in excess of 8 paid hours in a day or 40 paid hours in a week. The overtime limits in 432.32 may not be exceeded.

Because employers are not prohibited from penalizing their employees if they refuse to work overtime, they do have the right to fire them.
