The Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) provides a method for assessing the quality of farmland to enable informed choices to be made about its future use within the planning system. It helps underpin the principles of sustainable development.

California, like every other state, offers property tax breaks for agricultural land. Specifically, farmers are able to take 20 to 75 percent off their property tax bill if they agree not to develop their land for ten years and do so with at least 100 acres.

Under MCL 324.3601, certain farmland in Michigan may be enrolled in a development rights program by which the owner may receive state income tax credits for property taxes paid. To be eligible, the farm must be at least five acres in size and 51% or more of the property must be committed to an agricultural use.

Which lands are eligible? Farm has been designated as a specialty farm by MDARD, is a minimum of 15 acres, and has a gross annual income exceeding $2,000/yr. “Agricultural use” means the production of plants and animals useful to humans, use in a federal acreage set-aside program, or a federal conservation program.

Agricultural property that qualifies for Agricultural Relief is land or pasture that is used to grow crops or to rear animals. It also includes: growing crops. stud farms for breeding and rearing horses and grazing.

4.3 Grade 3 – good to moderate quality agricultural land Land with moderate limitations that affect the choice of crops, timing and type of cultivation, harvesting or the level of yield. Where more demanding crops are grown yields are generally lower or more variable than on land in grades 1 and 2.

Grade 4: Poor Quality Agricultural Land Land included within this grade suffers severe limitations that significantly restrict the range and/or yield of crops to be grown. This land is mainly suited to grass with occasion arable crops – the yields of which are variable.
