Habitat for Humanity works in a number of different ways to create decent, affordable housing. In addition to new construction, Habitat also renovates existing homes in many communities, particularly in urban areas. Habitat for Humanity helps people repair and improve their own homes and neighborhoods.

Basic qualification criteria: Minimum employment income of $40,000 per year (dependent on location). Maximum total household income dependent on family size. Have children under the age of 18. At least one member of the household working full-time (35 hours per week).

The application process takes between one and three months. If an applicant is accepted into the Homeownership Program, the process from acceptance through moving into a home can take from eight months to two years, depending on available funding, construction schedules and the future homeowner's Sweat Equity progress.

FACT: Habitat for Humanity builds houses to help those in need and then sells the houses to the homeowner partners. Because of Habitat's no-profit, no-interest loans, and because houses are built principally by volunteers, mortgage payments are affordable for those unable to obtain conventional financing for a home.

You must also have a credit score of 580 or higher. Those without a credit score may be accepted with alternative credit documentation.

Habitat charges 25% of your family's combined annual gross (before taxes) income for mortgage payments. Example: If your combined family income is $50,000 per year, we can charge you up to $1041.00 per month for your mortgage payment. We include your property taxes and condo fees in this amount.

Your income must be 120% or below the median household income for the county in which the home is located. You must have a need for housing, you must show the ability to pay an affordable mortgage loan for 30 years, and you must demonstrate a willingness to partner with Habitat.

In order to qualify for a Habitat home, potential homeowners typically have to show they've lived or worked in the community for at least one year, have proof of income within a set range, and must commit to serving approximately 325 hours on the job site, building their very own house alongside a team of volunteers, ...
