Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

By default your Footnote text is the same Style as your Normal style but with a smaller font size, usually 10pt. You can change the Footnote text to a different Font and/or size using its own Style (called Footnote Text), so it's just a matter of locating and modifying the style.

If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

To keep footnotes on the same page in Word: Open your Word document. Select your footnote near the page footer. Right-click the footnote and select Paragraph. Select the Line and Page Breaks tab. Click to enable the Keep lines together checkbox.

That's due to the formatting of your Footnote Reference style. Use Format>Style to change it.

The Footnote Separator might have spaces before added to it. To check go into Draft View. The on the Reference tab select Show Notes. From the pull-down, Footnotes menu choose the separator.

When in Draft mode, you need to click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon and then select the Footnote Separator from the dropdown at the top of the footnotes pane and format the paragraph to remove the space before it.

The number will also appear in the footer so you can type the citation's content beside it. A footnotes entered this way will only appear on that page -- it won't show up on other pages.
