How do I start the retirement process? Call ERS to start the retirement process no more than 90 days before your expected retirement date, which is always the last day of the month. ERS will mail or email you a retirement acceptance form with options you elect over the phone. Sign the form and have it notarized.

Pension and 401(k) Plans combined 30 years = approximately 59% of salary* (annuitized). With Social Security benefits, total benefit could provide 90% or more of final salary.

ERS invests the money in the Trust Fund to increase its value. The state retirement plan is a defined benefit plan. That means, when you are eligible and choose to retire, you will get a monthly payment (or annuity) for the rest of your life – no matter how long you live.

Sign on to ers.ga.gov, log on to an account and click “Apply for Retirement” on the desktop. Once “Apply for Retirement” is clicked, interactive screens guide the Member through the application process. Once the application is completed, a Member clicks the “Submit” button.

Disability or industrial disability retirement consists of a monthly retirement allowance paid to the employee for life or until recovery from the disabling injury or illness. The employee must be substantially incapacitated from the performance of duty.

Sign in to your ERS OnLine account. (If you don't have an account, you can register for one.) Select “Withdraw My Retirement Account" (under “My Retirement Information”). On the next page, click “Request A Retirement Account Withdrawal.”
