Google has begun paying out compensation to Illinois residents as part of a $100 million settlement deal, resulting from claims the internet giant had been "storing biometric data" without the necessary consent, in violation of state law.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this year in Cook County Circuit Court, claims that Google violated Illinois law by collecting and storing residents' biometric data through Google Photos without proper notice and consent.

A Cook County judge in September of last year gave final approval of the $100 million settlement, more than three months after the agreement was reached between the plaintiffs and Google.

Last September, a judge approved a $100 million settlement with the state of Illinois. Claimants who submitted a valid claim can now expect to receive their payments. Electronic deposits have already commenced, while those who opted for a paper check should allow up to two weeks for delivery.
