All private schools are required under s. 1002.42, Florida Statutes, to register with the Department of Education and complete an annual survey each year. Each owner of a private school must submit fingerprints to FDLE for a criminal background check.

Private/Non-Public: Directory The State Department of Education (DOE) has the responsibility and authority to write rules for public and private schools in Florida and the Department of Health has inspection authority to apply the DOE standards, per section 381.006(16), Florida Statutes.

Children who attend public schools are entitled to a free appropriate education and an IEP, and they receive funding from the federal government. Private schools do not receive this funding and are not required to provide a free appropriate education or an IEP.

Length of School Year and Days Attendance at a private school satisfies the compulsory school attendance law if the child maintains regular attendance during the school term of either 180 actual school days or a minimum of 170 actual school days and the hourly equivalent of 180 actual school days.

One paragraph should review how your child is "smart," but don't discuss grades or test scores here. Instead, focus on how your child is academically engaged and intellectually curious. Use stories and anecdotes to add depth. Another paragraph, describe your child's character and personality.

"If there are no big concerns about academic ability, learning issues or motivation, I'd say wait until your child is a little older and they have begun to discover their own interests, which usually comes at about age 10," Ehrlich says. "A good time is around middle school.

There is no state law requiring private schools to be accredited. However, some private schools do choose to become accredited, and there are many independent accrediting organizations for private schools to select from.
