Reactive arthritis, also known as Reiter's syndrome, is a form of inflammatory arthritis that develops in response to an infection in another part of the body (cross-reactivity).

Hans Conrad Julius Reiter (26 February 1881 – 25 November 1969) was a German Nazi physician who conducted medical experiments at the Buchenwald concentration camp. He wrote a book on "racial hygiene" called Deutsches Gold, Gesundes Leben – Frohes Schaffen.

ReA was described by the German physician Hans Reiter in 1916, and for a time the disorder was known as Reiter syndrome. This eponym is no longer used, because of Reiter's activities as a Nazi war criminal, and also because his was not the first description of ReA, and it mischaracterized the pathogenesis.

History. When reactive arthritis appears in a triad that also includes ophthalmic and urogenital manifestations, the eponym "Reiter's syndrome" is often applied; German physician Hans Conrad Julius Reiter described the condition in a soldier he treated during World War I.

There is more than ample evidence that Hans Reiter, whose name has been eponymously linked to a rheumatologic syndrome, was a Nazi war criminal. He was responsible for heinous atrocities that violated the precepts of humanity, ethics, and professionalism.

Hanns Reiter (1868) gave the concept of ecology. The term 'ecology' is derived from two words 'Oikos meaning home and 'logos' meaning study. The term ecology system was first used in 1869 by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel. Literally means 'study of home'.

It was previously called "Reiter syndrome," named after Hans Reiter, who first described this syndrome. Today, it is believed that the disorder is due to an aberrant autoimmune response to a gastrointestinal or genitourinary infection caused by salmonella, shigella, campylobacter, or chlamydia.
