California's Sexually Violent Predator Statute allows the state to go one step farther than incarcerating an individual convicted of a sex offense. The SVP law permits the state to civilly commit an offender after completion of a prison sentence ordered as a result of conviction of a sex offense.

Megan had last been seen riding her bike outside her home in West Windsor Township, New Jersey, on July 29. Her parents found her bike on the front lawn and immediately began to search for her. The following day, her body was discovered in Mercer County Park.

It was dumped on the West Windsor side of Mercer County Park. Jesse K. Timmendequas was arrested at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. Police told the Kanka family that Megan's body had been found in the weeds.
