North Carolina law says children ages seven to 16 must attend school. More than 10 unexcused absences alert the school principal who then meets with the child's parents. If the parent refuses to make an effort to get the child back into the classroom, school social workers identify such situations as truancy cases.

Excessive Absences Students, who miss more than ten days in a class, whether excused or unexcused, will be subject to an attendance based failure (FF).

When a child has been absent without legitimate excuse from the public school the child is supposed to attend for 30 or more consecutive hours, 42 or more hours in one school month, or 72 or more hours in one school year.

Required form for medication School staff may administer medication to students only when the Parent and Physician Order for Medication form (Form 1702) is completed by the parent and physician and present at the school. Form 1702 is also available from the school.

Personal Searches - A student's person and/or personal effects (e.g. purse, book bag, etc.) may be searched whenever a school authority has reasonable suspicion to believe that the student is in possession of illegal or unauthorized materials.

The North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law requires that absences be recorded as excused or unexcused. If your child accumulates excessive unexcused absences a referral will be made to the school social worker.

Notice: If your child misses TWELVE (12) or more unexcused days of school, you will be in violation of the Mississippi Compulsory School Attendance Law.
