Higher Grade Subjects (HG) are those that help you gain entry into university because they have higher credit. Standard Grade Subjects (SG) are subjects with low credit. An example of SG subjects is Life Orientation (L.O). Most universities do not look at L.O marks because it is a low credit subject.

The National Senior Certificate or NSC is a high school diploma and is the school-leaving certificate in South Africa. This certificate is commonly known as the matriculation (matric) certificate, as grade 12 is the matriculation grade.

Each subject is assigned a performance level ranging from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). To qualify for a national senior certificate, you must achieve a minimum performance level of 3 (40-49%) in your home language, 2 (30-39%) in your first additional language, and at least a performance level of 3 in four other subjects.
