A loan deferment allows you to temporarily halt making payments on the principal (and interest, if your loan is subsidized) of your loan.

Loan ForgivenessAfter 25 years, any remaining debt will be discharged (forgiven). Under current law, the amount of debt discharged is treated as taxable income, so you will have to pay income taxes 25 years from now on the amount discharged that year.

The first step is to write a simple reminder that the repayment date is passed and the loan has not been paid. This letter is usually very friendly and kindly requests that the money be repaid. If it is not possible for the borrower to repay in one lump sum, the lender can agree to extend the monthly payments.

Student loan forgiveness is possible after 20 years if you're only repaying undergraduate loans, or after 25 years for any of the loans you're repaying from graduate school or professional study. Student loan forgiveness is possible after 25 years of repayment.

After 25 years on the program, any remaining debt is forgiven. People with loans in default cannot be in the program. However, people can get their loans out of default by making a number of "reasonable" payments.

Income-Based Repayment Any remaining balance on your student loans is forgiven after 25 years, unless you're a new borrower as of July 1, 2014, in which case your unpaid balance is forgiven after 20 years.

The Pay As You Earn Repayment Plan qualifies you for loan forgiveness after 20 years of on-time payments. This repayment plan will generally offer you the lowest monthly payment. To enroll in this repayment plan, you must demonstrate a financial hardship.
