Working as a security officer in Texas as a private contractor (1099 worker) is illegal, and should be avoided. There are exceptions to this, but unless you are a full-time Texas Peace Officer, security companies need to hire you as an employee (W-2 worker).

Security guards in Texas have a limited authority to detain or arrest individuals. As private citizens, security guards can perform citizen's arrests, but they must be very careful. They can only arrest someone if they witness the person committing a felony or an offense against the public peace.

There are three levels of security officers in Texas: Level II Noncommissioned Security Officers (Unarmed Security Guard) Level III Commissioned Security Officers (Armed Security Guard) Level IV Personal Protection Officers (Executive Protection/Bodyguard)

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) regulates the private security profession in Texas.

As a Level 3 Commissioned Security Officer you are allowed to carry the following: Everything that a Non-commissioned security officer can carry plus: Baton if certified (must take a baton class and be a Commissioned officer) Handgun if certified. Shotgun if certified.

The private security profession includes armed and unarmed security guards, personal protection officers, private investigators, alarm systems installers and monitors, armored car couriers, electronic access control device installers, and locksmiths.
