Both archaeological and historical records indicate that European contact and colonialism initiated a significant reduction in the indigenous population size through warfare, enslavement, societal disruption, and especially widespread epidemic disease (1–3), although the magnitude of population decline remains in ...

California Indians lived by hunting, fishing, and collecting wild plant foods. Typically, men hunted and fished while women and children collected plant foods and small game. The most important food was the acorn. The Indians cracked acorns, removed the kernels, and pounded them into flour.

The 1925 book Handbook of the Indians of California estimated that the indigenous population of California decreased from perhaps as many as 150,000 in 1848 to 30,000 in 1870 and fell further to 16,000 in 1900. The decline was caused by disease, low birth rates, starvation, killings, and massacres.

Up to 16,000 Native Californians died in the genocide, which took place from the 1840s through the 1870s. Most of the deaths occurred during hundreds of massacres during which state and local militias encircled and murdered Native peoples.

Diseases brought by gold prospectors, along with the violence that miners commit against Native peoples, take their toll. By the end of the Gold Rush, the Native population of California has fallen from 310,000 in 1769, to 30,000.

Meanwhile, white settlers and the California government enslaved native people and forced them to labor for ranchers through at least the mid-1860s. Native Americans were then forced onto reservations and their children forced to attend “Indian assimilation schools.”

When Europeans arrived in the late 18th century, California's native population was close to 300,000 people. But the population then plummeted over the 19th century through a combination of deliberate violence at the hands of white settlers and the spread of foreign illnesses.

The California Indians used the natural objects they found around them. In the grasslands, there were many rabbits to hunt. Desert plants had strong fibers that could be used to make string. The people used the resources from the land, the rivers, and the ocean.
