This invitation-only competition is open to the top ten ranked dogs in the AKC National Owner-Handled Series in each breed/variety from the 2022 qualifying year and drew an entry of 827 dogs.

Basically, field trials are competitions and hunt tests are not competitive. In a field trial, one dog wins, or depending on the structure of the trial, one dog in each division wins. In a hunt test, each dog is judged individually, not in comparison to other dogs, and is awarded a score based on its performance.

Brittanys are medium-sized dogs, with American lines (17.5–20.5 inches (44–52 cm) at the withers ing to an AKC standard adopted in 1990) tending to be larger and have a blockier head than French (17–20.5 inches (43–52 cm)), and females at the lower end.

Member: Clubs which have been holding licensed events for at least 10 years are eligible to apply for membership in the AKC (only certain types of clubs are eligible to apply for membership). Member clubs select delegates to attend the AKC's quarterly meetings. Clubs are elected to membership by the sitting delegates.

There are three hunt test levels – Junior, Senior, Master, and titles can be earned at each level. Judges score dogs on their natural ability to mark and remember a fall, on their hunting style, perseverance or courage.

AKC Groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding.
